Probe committee fails to meet speaker Among

Legislators investigating the iron sheets are grumbling about Speaker Anita Among’s failure to meet them over her role in the assumed divergence of relief items that were meant for the liable people in Karamoja sub region.

Being listed among the beneficiaries of the iron sheets, she has however continued snubbing committee proceedings.

Ms Jesica Ababiku the committee chairperson while addressing journalists yesterday in Kampala she said the planned meeting with the speaker was cancelled on last minute after her schedule being re adjusted to accommodate another discussion with an international guest.

“ we informed the speaker about her intention of meeting her and she gave us the opportunity to meet her this week on Tuesday except she received a guest from outside Uganda.

However Ms Ababiku added that they had supported the speaker’s position of meeting the guest after acknowledging that the person was in her office.

“ We have already received the written submission from her on the accountability of iron sheets since we couldn’t meet her .”Ms Ababiku said.

However the contents in the document weren’t revealed to the media.

Previously Ms Among had spoken about the iron sheets saga while presiding over the Parliament last month were she denied any wrongdoing and acknowledged the relief items meant for vulnerable people in the north eastern region of the country ending up in her constituency and as a way of avoiding shame to the House she purchased 500 iron sheets and sent them back to the Office of the Prime minister.

The Parliament’s director of communication and public affairs Mr Chris Obori when interviewed yesterday told this media that Ms Among’s statements on the floor of parliament were credible enough to be used without a personal interface.

The OPM oversees affirmative action of the distribution of relief items in the country. A section of beneficiaries including ministers and members of Parliament have stated that.
