The police in Busoga North are searching for the drivers of the vehicles involved in the fatal accident that claimed the lives of a former parliamentary aspirant and an LC II vice chairman in Luuka District.
Gladys Aliyinza, the wife of the deputy presidential spokesperson Faruk Kirunda, and Yusuf Biita, the LC II vice chairman for Kiriimwa Parish, Bukomwa Subcounty, were killed when the pickup vehicle they were travelling in collided with a sugarcane truck in Luuka District.
Drivers’hereabouts unknown
However initial reports indicated that Aliyinza’s driver had been taken to the hospital, but the Busoga North Region Police spokesperson, Micheal Kasadha, stated that both drivers were on the run and the hunt was on to apprehend them.
The accident occurred at Nawansega cell, Nawansega Ward, Bukova Town council in Luuka District, where the sugarcane-laden truck from Kaliro side collided head-on with the climbing double cabin Isuzu driven by Aliyinza.
Attempts to save lives unsuccessful
Biita died on the spot, and despite attempts to save Aliyinza’s life, she succumbed to her injuries on the way to Musana Hospital in Kaliro District.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Faruk Kirunda, the deputy presidential spokesperson, announced the untimely death of his wife, Gladys Aliyinza, with a heavy heart and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of sympathy and support from the public.
The late Aliyinza, a resident of Lambala Village, Irongo Parish in Luuka’s Irongo Subcounty, had been actively phone banking across the district ahead of the 2026 parliamentary elections.
