The examination board for Technical and Vocational Education and Training ( TVET ) has announced the cancellation of the results for 55 candidates who participated in the recent TVET exams.
This decision comes after an investigation revealed irregularities in the conduct of the exams.
The First Lady and minister of Education and sports Janet Museveni on Thursday okayed the proposal by the Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board ( UBTEB) to cancel the results.
“ I have taken note of the 55 candidates whose results have been recommended by the Board for cancellation due to involvement in examination malpractice,” she said.
Meanwhile the board has taken this measure to ensure the integrity and fairness of the examination process, as well as to maintain the reputation of the TVET system.
The cancellation of the results for the 55 TVET candidates stems from a thorough investigation conducted by the examination board as such actions undermine the principles of honesty, fairness, and meritocracy that the TVET system upholds.
However the irregularities in question included the use of unauthorized materials, collusion among candidates, and other forms of misconduct.
According to UBTEB a executive secretary Onesmus Oyesigye the exam results were for cohorts that were not presented in the April – May 2023 examination series due to the staggered calendar in the tertiary institution brought about by the COVID-19 lockdown.
However these actions not only compromise the credibility of the examination process but also put honest and hardworking candidates at a disadvantage.
The examination board recognizes the impact this may have on the affected candidates and their aspirations.
However, it firmly believes that maintaining the integrity of the TVET system and upholding the values of honesty and fairness are of paramount importance. Moving forward, the examination board is committed to implementing stricter measures to prevent exam malpractice.
These measures may include enhanced invigilation, the use of advanced technology to detect cheating, and increased awareness campaigns to educate candidates about the consequences of malpractice.
The board also emphasizes that it remains fully committed to providing a level playing field for all candidates as It will continue to work diligently to ensure that future exams are conducted transparently, free from any form of malpractice.
The cancellation of the results for the 55 TVET candidates serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining the integrity and credibility of the examination process.
The examination board’s decision to nullify the results underscores its commitment to upholding the principles of honesty and fairness in the TVET system.
